Ekadhikena Purvena: By one more than the previous one.
Meaning: To obtain the next number, add 1 to the previous one.
Ekadhikena Purvena in Multiplication
Ekadhikena Purvena sutra can be used to quickly multiply any two numbers of two digits (say AY and AZ) whose
- The first digits are the same i.e.(A=A)
- The second digits add up to 10 (Z+Y=10)
For example, to multiply 27 x 23, below are the different steps of how we go about it.
- Take the first digit which is common in both numbers, in the above case it is 2
- Apply Ekadhikena to it – i.e. increment it by one. so the number 2 incremented by one becomes 3 (2+1=3).
- Now the product of 2×3 equals 6.
- Next, write down the product of the other two digits which is 7×3=21
- The answer is 621.
It can be even resolved mentally without using a pen or paper.
Ekadhikena Purvena in Finding Squares
The above method can also easily be implemented to find the squares of numbers ending with five because the sum of their last two digits is 5+5 which is 10, which hence meets the requirement of the formula.
To find 45×45, all we need to do is 4×5,5×5 which is 2025.
If as students we start practicing and acquire expertise within all these Vedic mathematical Sutras this is surely going to help us do lightning-fast calculations without using calculators.
